I’ve often had to wonder- Why the world is so obtuse? And equates manual labor, With a mind of little use. I’ve known a lot of cowboys- Who truly liked to read. Self-educated scholars, And thinking men, indeed. I have friends who are dumbfounded By my few computer skills- And can’t believe that writing, Is where I find my thrills. They think that western clothing, Means strong backs and hands for hire- Few, if any, outside interests, Nor intellectual desires. Just because a man loves nature- Does not mean that he’s a fool. There’s a wealth of education, In the natural history school. So be careful in your judgments, For men are much like books, You can’t judge them by their covers, Nor judge him by his looks. |

You are so right, John. My best friend is a sharecropper's daughter from Texas. One of the most intelligent people I've ever known. This poem is a tribute to my friend ,my parents and so many others who deserve it. Thank you. Ida |

Wonderfully written, John! Many misconceptions surface when descriptors like cowboy or cowgirl ride into the conversation. My daughter, most of her acquaintances and trainers are 'equestrians,' and all intelligent multi-dimensionally talented people. Many of my most trusted people have been 'nature' people, including some who rarely communicate with homo sapiens, by choice. (And the most passionate word processor is NOT the computer keyboard.) |

I always took to carpenters or nature loving people myself. That is because I just had not met any cowboys. You are added to my list. "late" |
