She was on another binge and wasn't going to stop.
If you confronted her she would say, "I haven't had a drop."
Of course she was lying but you had to keep the peace.
When she was a little more intoxicated she would say,
"I'm over twenty-one and I'll have a drink if I please.
And then would come the crying stage where she would say
"I love my kids and I would die for them anyday."
And she did die, not for the children but from the drink,
The weapon that kept her demons at bay,
So she could forget whatever evil haunted her days
and caused her to wake screaming in the dead of night.
Blood curdling screams that startled me into wakefulness
and left me wide-eyed and shaking with fright.
And though she's been gone these many years
I still feel the cold terror of a scream in the night.

a very powerful 'reality' write!

[even though I have many personal experiences
that would lend themselves to this type of
'penning'...I couldn't likely ever do one...I
  greatly admire those who can!]

serious, sustained applause!

Ida,

This is very good writing.  Demons like that can be a big problem at times.  They sneak up on you when you’re too relaxed.

Have faith Ida, time cures most things and even if it doesn't banish sadness altogether
It thankfully helps diminish the pain.

All the best to you dear Ida
