Green & crisp & crunchy to hold In a small & sweaty palm. You could layer them up in layers Or roll them into rolls. You could pretend to be a player In some seedy gambling hole. If in the late seventies You were a kid Of say 5 or 6 or 7 And you had a few pound notes in your hand, You felt like a man. You felt like adulthood had finally began. And Grandad never missed a chance To offer up a pound note For me & my sister to share He'd wave it in our faces Then he'd tear it in half Then he'd laugh 'But Grandad!' we'd cry 'There's nothing funny about money!' Mum would get the Sellotape from the kitchen drawer. |

I think this poem is more than putting money back together; it is about why you had to work so hard, and to be so sad to see it ripped apart... this is a well-dug poem, and something several nations to see more of. It is not a material poem. Well done, Simon! |

Margherita: Thanx for your comment, your continuing support means so much to me as I'm sure it does everyone. LindsayP: My sentiment entirely. Thank you. Magnus: I certainly had to (& still have to) stick a few back together only as I get older the notes are bigger & (only slightly) more valuable so from that point of view, nothing really changes. Thanx Sunshine: What an interesting reading, certainly more interesting than mine, it just proves that these things that we write are purely the property of the reader once they are exposed to the reader & thanx for reminding me of that. Just wanted to (belatedly) thank everyone who not only read but commented on the writing, it means so much to me. |
