National elections drive me insane. They heighten my fear this once-grand democratic experiment, the United States, is as doomed as the dinosaur. We are the result of cascading bifurcations, for our multi-cultural streams of consciousness that once converged into a workable sea of diversity seem somehow to have split into polarized streams of indifference. And when order disintegrates until total chaos emerges, does anyone win? Terrorists from other lands are not the ultimate enemy of democracy. Indifference to our rights, freedom of speech, the fundamentals of justice and truth, indifference to the basic human needs of the weakest among us, will be our unraveling. |

Taxes, oil prices, education, healthcare, now that will also be the death to some families... How is anyone going to make it with Gas going up 100.00 a barrel and healthcare cost, no healthcare, I agree is all seems too much like American Idol...lol~ You know you're in love, when you can't fall asleep, because reality is finally better than your dream~Dr.Seuss |

I think this is true for many of today's "developed" nations, sadly enough. Not many like to admit it though. |

I think we have plenty to worry about and I don't think I would want to take over the presidency at this time. Ida |

ARH, with all due respect, this isn't about the public "idol" imagery of the candidates perpetuated by media hysteria, and this isn't a joking matter. Thanks to all who read, even more so, to all who take the words freedom, equality, national security, and truth seriously, and who pay attention to what is going on in the streets and backwaters of America. In my humble opinion, we are a nation more divided now than ever before, and are on the verge of losing our fundamental freedoms for the sake of protecting ourselves from 'external' threats. Speaking as an Englishman I'm not really qualafied to comment on domestic American matters but I think your piece rings true throughout the Western World. Like it...! |

Indifference to our rights, freedom of speech, the fundamentals of justice and truth, indifference to the basic human needs of the weakest among us, will be our unraveling. This is so true, and I find myself having a hard time sleeping at night worrying about what's to become of us as a nation. M |

I am EXCEEDINGLY glad that a few "P.I.P.-land" authors still have the commitment (and stamina) to do these 'social impact/conscience' writes!... I am particularly fond of: "Indifference to our rights, freedom of speech, the fundamentals of justice and truth, indifference to the basic human needs of the weakest among us, will be our unraveling(!)" "Democracy" is a rare and precious (ultimately fragile) thing in the historic record. Its demise begins with the 'dumbing down' of a populace (erosion of a 'well informed' citizenry) that no longer "dares to read, think, speak, and write" (as John Adams put it) who readily surrender their 'fundamental individual rights' to the simplistic promises of demagogues who exploit their fears and manipulate the political process simply to achieve their narrow personal agendas; and who offer only simplistic solutions to the least essential problems and (alleged) 'protection' from nebulous external 'evils' in return. Several posts in "The Alley" today were (in my opinion) a rather stark and shocking reminder of how far we have slipped in such dangerous directions! |

Kacy, You hit right on with "indifference" - we give up our rights without understanding the ramifications of doing so. We don't vote as a rule. If we do vote, too many of us don't vote with decisions based on knowledge. Maybe we reached the pinnacle of our glory days and were too self-absorbed to realize it. A |
