Gaia's feathered and furry friends
each have unique ways
to ring Happy New Year's bells.
They show their true colors
at the breakfast bell
suspended from the cherry tree.
Sassy squirrel screams
at me this morning,
while dangling upside down
from a too-fragile limb.
"How dare you squirrel-proof
my precious seed-bell?"
One lone chickadee flies in from the west,
performs an aerial acrobatic toe-point landing
on the swinging seed-bell,
then munches to his heart's content.
Sassy remains suspended
but unable to steal
a single sunflower seed,
screaming at the chickadee,
flicking her tail repeatedly
at the intruder.
The cheeky Chickadee ignores the scolding,
continues his morning feast.
Sassy screams in my direction,
then settles for fallen treasures
on the snow covered ground.
I promise Sassy a corn cob,
and her own bowl of seed,
determined to do my part
to ensure Peace prevails
this new year.

What a cute poem. I love animals and you sound like a lady after my own heart. Hope
the coming year is filled with happiness and love for a gentle spirit.

Oh, to be as clever as a squirrel!
I know the problem all too well.

Try some safflower seed for the chickadees.

Sassy now has her own dinner tray, one she can raid to her heart's content. Now, to secure the bunnies bowl 'neath the evergreen tree....
Happy New Year to all!

then munches to his heart's content

oh, if only all of humanity and of the animal realm could eat to their heart's content!

I love your beautiful description of your winter garden, it's so full of life and so full of your love.

Happy New Year to you and to your little friends.
