I always knew one day I would Return to the scene of my childhood To see old friends and familiar faces Revisit long forgotten, secret places The air raid shelter where we had our camp The wicket that doubled as a gas lamp Prestons orchard where I climbed the trees Ripping my first pair of long pants & skinning my knees Dad's Old Wolsey in the drive Long lost loved ones still alive Ye Old Rope & Anchor pub I went in with my mates The terminus bus shelter where I took my dates Abbey's field where I had my first kiss (Hunter's barn....Sheer bliss!) The assembly room in my old school The playground where I'd act the fool Now I'm fast approaching 57 The last time I stood here I was just turned 11 How strange it is now to see My childhood home door closed to me I still feel as thought the right is mine To wander in at any time And yet to see a stranger there Sitting in my Father's chair Would cause me pain, I shan't deny Without my Mother standing by I cannot help but feel somehow This was once my home so still is now Oh God how I wish I had the face To knock and ask if by there grace I might just for one minute be At home once more with Mum & Dad for tea . |

A beautiful, touching walk down memory lane. There are always mixed feelings when we visit our childhood places, especially when there are no longer any familiar faces or voices to greet. Enjoyed this greatly. Love, Margherita |

I believe that many people would like to return to the house where they spent their childhood but would be upset to find that the place is no longer theirs. How bittersweet! |
