The cigarette smoke
filters the sunlight
Creating a misty yellow haze
that dries my eyes
turning them red
and sore in the morning glare

I wipe the tears
staining her high cheekbones
and kiss her forehead
pulling her face to mine
and feeling her wet cheeks
on my hard
Stubbly jaw

My heart beats
harder
in my chest
as I fight to breathe
and say the words
she doesn’t want to hear
and I never want to say

I look away
into the smoke
at the pictures on the wall
of the small
hotel room
and I open my mouth
to tell her
Goodbye…
