in the shadows

Boo diddy diddy
the cat meowed pretty
when the rabbit jumped over the moon;
I'm never wrapped tight
but I travel light.

Is that old meat wagon coming for me soon?

I haven't prayed since before long pants,
but sometimes I wish I'd remember,
other times
like tonight
I know I danced with the Devil
and longingly wish I'd forget
perhaps then to slip easily
this soft grasp on sanity
perchance I even would sleep
and keep still from jumping
to valid conclusions;
it's those wishing times
the chill quiet times
when the itch of life drives me crazy.

You see?

Always,
after the storm is over,
after all that is won
or is lost,
I'm bereft of emotion
beyond the recall of battle
unable to assay the cost of survival;
I'll grin and say "fine" if I'm asked,
I'll smile and nod a grim wink
and those around
often will think I've started to dotter.

I laugh at the children
who wish string is a theory
and also it could be a cheese
when they can't see threads of existence;
politicians not withstanding,
there are no keys to the kingdom of god
since the locks were melted for stars.

Where are the days gone,
the quiet patient days,
the ways of guarding endlessly,
guarding the pass in my old wolf skin cloak
drawn tight to the neck
blocking the eternal winds,
sharp in the eye to the trail,
simplicity's invaluable task?

Of course in the end
I would fail and all the people did die
way back before there was linear thought;
bodies are nothing but costumes for souls
congealed for a moment
thought's dust balls gathered in time,
coming and going
swept by the wind,
pretties for parties
when new guests arrive.

if I'd have been up at 4am, I'm sure I'd have felt the same way

instead bad dreams came

(endless guarding...yeah, I know)

I liked the line Margherita picked out also

Oh, dearest icebox...these words sit the lap of truth. Be at peace, friend, knowing you've touched so many with your special glow. I'll be humming a healing chant for you tonight, hoping you are not in great pain.

You may have danced with the devil, IceBox but at least you're honest about it. In aworld full of hypocrits thats a welcome change. "When men grow virtuous in their old age, they only make a sacrifice to God of the devil's leavings."

Dear Box of Ice, it may seem like I am taking the easy way out in replying, but everybody else who replied before me, took what I was going to say! ~ Right down the special quotes!

Might I add, that you conjure up poetry that every reader can identify with on some level or another. ~ and we all can identify talent when it is laid out before us as you do so expertly!

Giving you a big, warm, healing hug,

EA
