Only Angels Understand

My gaze passes through the bars
as the other inmates sleep,
I think about all that I had
that I will not get to keep.

Incarceration, like a hurricane,
takes away material things,
an understanding is what it brings-
the reason why the caged bird sings.

I cannot taste the rain,
I cannot touch the thunder,
I cannot smell the lightning
or see the wind I'm under,

why I'm here, I never once
thought to stop to wonder.

Who will hear my song come dawn?

This broken road that lingers on
hardly notices the night is gone.

Yet I know that tune will lead to you
where I can finally take your hand
and pass through times, most certainly
only angels understand.

Dixie,

I came in just now and saw your name and smiled.  I don't know you like so many do here, but I know that you are one I think of and miss when you are not here.  You have been a friend to me - and I am always here for you.

I love this poem - I love all your poetry.  This one, though, is heartwrenching.  I hope you are back.

I have missed you.

Brava!!!!!

Good to read you again.

Some of the images are painful, other poignant, all worth reading.

Welcome back!

Dixie, you have been sorely missed.  Yes, the angels understand everything and sometimes, you know, they walk amongst us as friends.  You have many at Pip.  My best to you, Dixie, for freedom to "be" and this I think is attainable no matter where one is.

It's been a bad year for a lot of people.

May it get better here on out for you and your loved ones.

it sure has been hard these past 5 months indeed

this was the only poem I could manage to write out...it's hard to think with all the noise in the jail. I started quite a few poems but never finished them. Maybe I will soon.

Thank you all for the cards and letters while I was there and for these wonderful comments of caring now that I'm back in the world enjoying my freedom again.

Simple things...never take them for granted.

you are wonderful people

A fine 'realism' write!...

especially:

"Incarceration, like a hurricane,
takes away material things,
an understanding is what it brings-
the reason why the caged bird sings(!)"

I am caged with the 'dark wolf' (depression)
and that is 'incarceration' enough...it is why
I try so hard to 'sing' with 'poetry!'

It is remarkable and admirable that this talented
author can express so eloquently some of the
effects of literal (physical) 'incarceration!'

Applause!

Dear Dixie, your song behind the bars is so heartwrenching and so impressive, that I have to pause  ... and hug you.

Looking forward to your unfinished poems, which I am sure you will be able now to finish.

Love and hugs, Poetess.

Well it's true what they say? You can take the poet away, but you cannot take the talent away...welcome back...we have so many lessons in life to learn, you have a better unstanding of freedom and what it is to be free..the best things in life are not free..the best thing in life is to BE free..thank you for this and i am glad to be saying that now you are FREE again..
