my hand was resting
against a poplar tree
that snapped
in an autumn wind
and came to rest
against a ragged birch

I returned
in not really spring
and found it
leaning there
forever

like your body
in the reclining passenger seat
after the accident

I am stunned.
This is the poem that makes me close the book, walk away and say ---

I can't read again for a bit.
I have to absorb this one.
