Umber Thoughts

today I unfold yellow memories
Fall brings out so much in me
things I hold dear and close to skin
as well as things buried with the worm
bed out back by the side of the house
starchplaid shirt tucked overalls
crisp October delivers black men
crammed tight in the back of
a rusted out green pick up truck
and to this day still some of
the most honest men I know
carrying long dried out cane poles
shaking every sun peaking limb to
rain thin shelled pecans from heaven
the day wears long with sweat dripping
red handkerchiefs rolling between
burlap bagged fingers in haste
to lemonade lunch of thick wheeled
sandwich cheese stuck between bread
cool drink dipped from a metal smile
exhausted all done for later pies

"no darkness has ever been deep enough to extinguish my personal knowledge of love"  Anne Rice

WOW! Helen, I love pecans!
Thank you for the memories shared in this and the southern write.
I thoroughly enjoyed this burnt-umber word-painting.

Smiling...

there's me lovely southern lady!

You look as elegant carrying a cane pole as you do a lace edged handkerchief...remember those? Of course you do.

Just like you remember those white stocking tights (that somehow never fit up to the crotch) and how hot they were in July but y'had to wear 'em, and the torture of that was second only to the stiff crinoline flouncy slip that was fun for spinning but scratchy in church...

See what you make me do? *laughing*

*touching the screen*

Mud squishing through toes of bare feet, impatiently watching that cork, and lawsy, I am craving iced tea now. With mint and a lemon wedge. In November.

Love you!
