Listening to every heart

A Lost Badge’s Courage

It was before I first heard a kinder voice;
when the assignation of education came, the
“you have to read this”,
when the red flag waved, but I did not see
the stars and stripes just yet;
only the red flag of fear.

A required read, the Red Badge of Courage;
my assimilations of a young Henry became
my own name in my mind, because I was there
for as later noted, Stephen used
“profuse use of color and rampant metaphor”
and even I rode that very horse
as an unequal Infantryman, noting of course,
there was no horse to be found.

Indeed, Henry was that very me who tried
to keep people on their own road;
but unlike Henry, I didn’t lie,
though I admit to only a wish to transform
gifts of sight; do you see the sun?
She is not yellow, but gold.

All of it, all of the read, of a man whom
fact did not know; all of it, the blood,
splatter, matter and guilt;
all of it ~ the hate, remorse, the shame,
and the horror…all of it…
I escape, even still, trying to put
those cries behind me.

When I heard McKuen’s voice, and
wrapped myself into another tone of poetry,
it was then, that for a swift moment thought,
if I can make something beautiful again,
if only for a moment, what dream might come?

Still, at times, the dream bleeds red,
because what is behind me, runs
to the front.

The phrase "assignation of education" fairly screamed out at me.  I love the way you used it.

Isn't it interesting that I, too, was deeply touched by McKuen.  I had hoped one might see some of that in my work.  But this isn't about me.

You know, stains, even mild stains, sometimes bleed through and it is how we attend to them that is the measure of us (I think).

Need I say I love this more than my poor vocabulary can express?

Poet, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

A sophisticated and thought-full write from one of pip's illustrious authors.

"Still, at times, the dream bleeds red,
because what is behind me, runs
to the front."

~ Aye, there's the rub, "Golden" One!

Not only do books become real, but they become friends and companions. Enjoyed this.

Sissie.......there is poetry in so many places....some called poem, and others words and voices.  A poem is in the listening ear, as yours is.

When I heard McKuen's voice... it was as if I'd been listening for it. *S* And lady...  you do make things beautiful again, you bring history to life... you make us care... gently compelling us to remember.

Beautiful work!
