There rises up a sensed despair
at precious moments lost
when easier it was to lie
on a bed not made for love
than venture up the mountainside
of all I felt inside.

A mountain nonetheless is here
and like a grasping monster
wrings out the price for mindlessness
from the fibres of a being
and weaves a deep regret
into each and every breath.

Mocking mountains stand amused
as shivers come unbidden
with the gusty winds of sorrow
and in the heat of wondering
whether late is now too late
laughter bubbles deep within
the bowels of solid rock.

There’s a river at the base
of mountainous dislike
but the waters of emotion
a benevolent protector
because the heartless too unyielding
to cross the great divide.

The mountain mocks and taunts
I bow but then arise;
‘tis nothing but a lifetime lost
and there are more besides!

If you wanted to shorten this,
the first verse says it all.

But I'm glad you didn't shorten it, Helen.

I like it.

Particularly...

There rises up a sensed despair
at precious moments lost
when easier it was to lie
on a bed not made for love

than venture up the mountainside
of all I felt inside.

Dear Helen, this is a fantastic write, with many lines of poetic heights.

Enjoyed it deeply.

Margherita

Mountains are made for climbing, but still it is sometimes good to go around when possible. Enjoyed

Oh, I'm sorry - I didn't acknowledge anyone's comments.  Thanks JL for bringing it up again so I can say, "Thank you everyone".  Hmm?  Could it be that we can really get second chances in life?

No doubt, about that, dear Helen!! Substitute the inside rainy weather with the sunshine of your trust.
