The feel of hot leather between my two thighs, The glare of the sun that beats at my eyes, The smell of the sage, and the taste of the sand- Tell me I’m home, I’m a part of the land. Long days in the saddle, in heat and in cold… The years of hard labor will make a man old. From sunup to sundown, but just so one knows- I am not complaining, it’s the lifestyle I chose. Some say I’m a cowboy, some say ‘buckaroo’- I’m proud of the handle, for that’s what I do. I can throw a “John Blocker”, or good “hoolihan”- And I know the diff’rence, I’m a part of the land. I’ll work without gripin’, as a matter of course- But a job ain’t worth doin, you can’t do from a horse. If I take your money, I’ll ride for your brand- It’s the code of the West, and I’m a part of the land. I’ve ridden the caprock, and ridden the plains- Endured me some dust storms, and rode in the rain. I love the long hours, I’ve ridden alone, I’m close to my Maker when I’m on my own. When my life is over, and my course is run- Don’t grieve at my passing, my life has been fun. Just carve on my marker, when at my grave you stand- “In death, as in life-He’s a part of the land”. |
