THE VISION At a time when the earth Was as quiet as a nun, But for the rising birds That blocked out the sun As they rose from the marshland To the endless sky. From my place in the future I watch them fly. Through a door in my mind Left slightly ajar Between my cluttered world And this scene from afar. A vision from long ago, Almost as ancient as earth time, Yet, as sharp and clear as yesterday It lingers in my mind. I cannot see the face Turned toward the sky, I do not know the place Where these lush marshlands lie. But the memory is alive with a power That defies both death and time This one majestic moment Is the jewel of many lifetimes. Ida Werrett |
