He was standin' in the doorway lookin' like the Jack of all Hearts.

he shot his arms from black wool  
turned handsomely to the side    

square brown fingertips
touched each womanheart in the room
startled hands dropped every card
ever held  
red queens fell to the floor  
slight tens turned corners up
delicate fingers whimpered
oh

he breathed once
drew in womanair
green felt smoothed itself
watching  
knowing what was to come

piano tinkle trickled  
stopped

silence hung

a shadow
bold and daring  
leaned into the room
a dark longing

it was a shadow  

nothing more
