The Fates Hair of spun gold with ruby-red lips, A face that could launch a thousand ships; Who shall be a braver soul than me? And would dare to live a life with she who gives--and gives more--but does not take, With fragile heart sleeved for one to break? For, all that I am is not in doubt, But what I am not naysayers tout; Grotesque and bent and ravaged by age, --An ogre, they see, and not a sage-- I live by other's wanton decrees, Which state that my form could never please. Nevertheless, my lonely heart yearns As a fire of passion, hidden, burns. I crave this girl who says she loves me, Yet cannot fathom how this can be. And coward that I am, I dare least, To lay bare my soul while still a beast. Faint hope have I that foulness will fade, From loathsome creature that love forbade, To handsome courtier--Fortune's son-- For whom this girl would nobly be won. And...yet...faint hope has turned to wonder, With preconceptions torn asunder. Flaxen hair now splayed across my chest, Her tears of joy soothe this savage breast. This beauty sees not what others see; She knows my heart--what I long to be. Seeing past this withered, ancient shell, Deep within to where my soul should dwell, She found remnants of my tattered soul To mend with tears, thus to make it whole. And now I sense some stirring of youth That bounds past old fears in search of truth, And finds the answers where they still lay-- Where--when youth passed--I threw them away. An age-old adage warns of such waste --Damage done when acts are made in haste-- So, discard not your heart of young days, While The Fates ply their ironic ways. I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran |

Thanks, TD. This was semi-autobiographical... John I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran |

Hi, TL. That's awfully nice of you to say that. I always try my best, and this one was from the heart. John I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran |

Hi, Marge! Thanks for the kind words. I was feeling a little "angst-y" about all of the TV bickering going on in the wee hours of the morning--or at any other time of the day, I fear. War, peace, life, death...sometimes it all gets to be too much. Thus, I wrote an allusive-filled Tanka to convey my uncertainty about said events, and of life itself. Love, John I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran |
