The mask I wear is now so old
The heart of warm grew slowly cold
Hiding as the days unfold
As truth remains within

The smile is broad and words are sweet
As through day the people meet
But sometimes I can’t stand the heat
And sadness does begin

Not giving what’s inside to show
Not changing what the people know
Another day does onward go
As I draw further in

At times true self will outward cry
But only when I’ve waved goodbye
The days façade, one of a lie
Of truth’s recurring sin

But as I age I turn the page
To find I reach another stage
Slowly walking from my cage
And letting life begin

And everyday in simple way
The mask does slowly slip away
Revealing things I have to say
And what I’ve held within
