Sally and Felix,
they’re sauntering
down the Avenue,
when Sally spots
someone they know.

It’s their old foster brother James.
He’s carrying an armload of books.

“Hey Felix,
would you look
who's here.

It’s our James,
you remember James
don’t you?”

“Yeah, who could forget James,
the creepy little S. O. B.?”

“Hey James,
how you doing—
you remember
Sally and me
don’t you?

What are you doing
here on the Avenue,
slumming?”

“It looks like
he’s still in school
Felix.
Look at
all those books.”

“You go to college James?”

“Yeah Felix,
I go to college.
How are you
and Sally doing?”

“We’re doing good
since we left
your place James.

You remember
how your old man
used to tie me up
and beat me,
don’t you?

You used to think
it was funny
to hear me scream,
didn’t you?”

“Hey Felix,
maybe we ought to
make James scream,
just to let him know
how it feels?”

“Nah,
let’s leave him alone.
He’s going to college.
They might teach him
something there.

He’d only have us arrested
anyway.”

“Yeah,
you’re right Felix.
You always know stuff
like that.

Bye the way James,
Felix, and I--
we don’t need to
go to college.”

Bobby

Passing shadows,

Thanks for the read and comments.  I'm glad you liked the ending line.  Sally and Felix, they know all that stuff.

Ruth,

This is very true.  You'll notice Felix doesn't waste time on revenge, and he can smell a rat from miles away.

You just kind of learn that, it’s something like osmosis.

You can tell it's near July 4th.  It sounds like a war zone around here.  Lots of fireworks.

Thanks for reading and the kind words.

Secondhanddreampoet,

Yes, Sally and Felix are hanging in there.
