Knights of Death stalk the night
bringing 'holy day' gifts
to children in fright,
tucked into bed by a warrior's plight,
heads filled with night dreams
crying blood-red screams.
Like carmine streaks on virgin snow,
forever marching to war we go,
like toy tin soldiers scattered about,
the real ones die in a scream and a shout,
begging, begging, begging

for Peace, not War.

"I do not want to die,"
said the young pawn to the King.
"Sorry,"  said the King,
"but it’s your turn to play"
this perpetual game.
The King is thus protected
by said expendable pawns.
And if need be,
so goes his Queen.

Alas, my strategy was weak,
my Pawns faltered.
My brave Knights rode off,
never to return.
The King castled himself,
before throwing the Queen to the front.
The cowardly capped Bishops
tucked in their tails and ran,
for they surmised
'twas the end of the game.

And the Dark Knight advanced,
smiling.

Check mate...

checkmate indeed!
sometimes I feel like
one of those pawns
expendable not by my choice

interesting 'write'!

As a lifelong chess player, I've always wanted to do a 'write'
referencing the game...but, never have succeeded in doing so!

I'm glad someone has!!

Kacy...too many times real life is played like a game...and there are so many losers.

When I first read the title, I read "When Prawns Fall" -- and thought it might be a cannery poem.  (smiles)

I really like this and it says so much.  Very good writing, Midnitesun dahlink.

When I was little I just played with the chess pieces, making a maze out of the board and imagining battles much like this one you described here.

Thank you.
