It took years to consider writing this poem You weren’t the best father, the nicest father Sometimes (lotsa times) I hated you But, I wasn’t the best daughter, the nicest daughter And sometimes you hated me too Go figure The fact is you were my only father, as good as it got You came with a no-return policy and you always were there I am not turning this into a saccharine tribute to “Daddy” But, I am remembering you and the times you made me smile You cheated at checkers, thinking “Super Kings” would give you an edge I still kicked your butt and lived to brag about it, night after night You built us a tree house, taught us how to use a hammer Called me “George” and ranted once that I acted just like a girl I, of course, stated the obvious You tried hard when you were sane enough to try You bought me a horse – why did you do that again? I loved her but never was terribly into the girl-horse thing. You read to us with a beautiful “should have been on the radio” voice You sang risqué songs that were stupid (really) You made me shine with pride when you said that I was a good driver I had the hottest boots in the third grace thanks to you Mom would have bought those ugly ones that slipped over shoes You let me pierce my ears at 12 rather than making me wait ‘til 16 Like Mom said So, tomorrow is Father’s Day and you have been dead a long time I did cry a bit because life with you was not all about hate and fear Sometimes it was wonderfully fun and unexpected Sometimes you let us ride on your creativity and bask in the fact That you were Dad. Funny how I still love you. --- Alison |

Absolutely touching poem. I love the way you shared the good and the bad of your relationship and in the end the love is still there. Thank you for writing this. It is how I feel about my own father, but can't put into words just yet. You are a blessed writer, so much emotion and detail. ![]() |

It sounds as though the road may have had it's bumps, but you made it through with love ... and that's what counts in the end. Much enjoyed Aziza. ![]() Best wishes, /Kit |

I enjoyed reading this. You did not honey-coat it, but told it as it was, and I thought it was an honest heart-felt tribute to your dad. Good job. lacydee |

Alison, I read this and right away I thought to myself...this is honesty and? This is love too. You honor him, with truth and love. Nicely penned. |
