In New Zealand Amongst the Ancient Trees

Finally winter arrives,
And with it the wind
Disrobing the trees
Of the remnants
Of their autumn clothes
So they now stand
Like the king
In, his new robes.

Whilst I and the trusty Honda
With it’s maxi catcher
Cut the sward,
And vacuum the last vestiges
Adding to the moldering
Compost heap.

All the time wondering
When, I might also lie there.

Someone mentioned on my turning 60 that I had entered the winter of life. Hence the words. But I will be damned if I am going to lie anywhere, they can cast me to the tide so that I may drift wherever it may take me, just as I have done in life.

MartyJo, may have reached the 3 score but more than ten remains, and I intend to live long enough to be a problem for my children :-)

I enjoyed this change of season write.
I also enjoy those "chop wood carry water"
chores and resultant wandering thoughts.

Kahlil, Sometimes the tasks in hand provide the spur for words to be organised as the tssk doesn't consume too much brain power, thank you for the read.

I liked the whole poem but somehow the line - "adding to the moldering compost heap" really fascinated me.

RogueandPoet, I think its called recycling, something we will all add to eventually as plant food, fish food, whatever, and so the world renews.

nakdthoughts, summer is a good time for rolling in the compost albeit it can get a bit smelly.

Hi Time Prophet!  Some people are born old.  Some don't have a chance to get old.  With a little luck, with age comes Lazy-Boy recliners, or a beach chair.  With even more luck, age only comes when you look in the mirror.   Personally, I choose to remain forty, and the year is always 1977

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
It's best to ignore it
Until you must.

"Finally" is a great poem, too!

Best, Gerontological Jim

oceanvu2, Well, as I advised my granddaughter, I DON"T do old, slower maybe but not old. I am off balloning in a couple of weeks, and booked to obtain skydiving license in the spring. As long as I can avoid the men in white coats that the family have hired to take me away.
