So many years
and you touch me,

I awake stopping my hand from reaching for you.
Why now,
this day
as in truth you have on other rare occasions done,
do you reach for me?
I can stop me,
sometimes,
from crying out loud;
I can not stop you
from lifting the shroud of time and memory
to reach inside me,
to plant the seeds
that grow to yield bitter fruits of yearning.
Is it any wonder,
it is not for me,
that I live as if a penitent,
a celibate
unable to touch another,
shielded from emotion
as if there exists,
stitched within me,
kevlar for the heart.

Such a moving write, Mr icebox! All shields are perhaps just states of mind but I guess so very difficult to remove or change.

what if when you reach they are always there but never for long?  How do you stop yourself from reaching?

I do not think that kevlar protects that what aches from the inside out.

Besides, I tried on one of those, they are not all that "lightweight"--and they made the twins depressed.

Icebox 2 AM can be a hard time, a soft time, and sometimes so unreal...but I see a piece of your heart here and it is very real.
