she was beige before blue
the sahara side of '95

down from the whitney stones
when morning was braless in recline

and the sierras staggered drunken
from june's empty womb

to the dirt of robber's trail
before they became just hill songs

underwater in the throat sand
of old mojave in his july jeans

winter left her tattoo'd shoes
for the worshipers of snow fires

that rattled their pretty tins
clanging the bars and inns

for just a solo sip of laughter
from a stranger without memory

to sooth the empty of their rings
