To Be A Woman

Put on makeup
Shave my legs
Curl my bangs
Every once in awhile
I want to remind myself,
           I am a woman.
I do this for a few days
           full of excitement and promise.
Then one day I’m tired,
           work was hard last night,
           dishes need done,
           pizza delivered for dinner.

What happened?

I’m just so tired and
            the house is a mess.
And all of my promises
             of feminine upkeep
             have fallen by the wayside.
In fact I don’t even think about it,

             most of the time.

My husband teases me
             about my hairy legs.
I feel a little guilty,
             and even more resigned.
That I just seem
             to not even care.
I use to care,
             years ago.
I still do in many ways,
             when I have time,
             when I’m not tired,
             when the housework is done.
I bought some silk pajamas,
             two pair in fact.
I look at them now and then,
             sitting in my dresser,
as I put on my sweats,
             again.
Work takes up
             so much of my time
Housework doesn’t
             take up enough.

But I try.

I drove my kids to school,
             because it was cold outside.
I hem pants at ten o’clock at night,
             and trim bangs
             at seven in the morning.
I go without sleep,
             to take them bowling.
And I work all night,
             in a nursing home.

Maybe the other doesn’t matter.
Maybe my children won’t remember,
             the dishes in the sink,
             the stained up sweats,
             or my messy hair.
Maybe, just maybe,
             they will remember
             the laughter
             the caring
             the love.
And maybe the hairy legs,
             don’t matter too much either.
When my husband smiles at me,
and grabs me for a hug.
And snuggles on the couch,
             with me in my sweats.

Maybe, just maybe,
             that is what it means

                     to be a woman.

Being a woman is a many things but above all else, it is a wonderful thing.  I truly enjoyed this slice of life and relate totally.

I wrote one too about hairy legs...like a fuzzy bear in hibernation LOL

as long as you can shave and put on those silk jammies now and then, it's refreshing! Take some time for yourself once in awhile. Just you and Calgon.

You sound like wonder woman.  Whoever your husband is he should be mighty proud to have you as a wife.  Homemaker, taking care of your children, and then working nights in a nursing home. Holy-smokes.  You should be given a medal of honor!
I thought pioneer women were a thing of the past.  You have my vote for mom/wife of the year.  Great write!!

This poem was written over 7 years ago, since then I don't work anymore (can't) and my "baby" graduates high school in a couple days!!  Things have changed a lot! Thank you all for the wonderful comments.

You know, I bet the kids remember the laughter too (even if they laugh at the memory of the hairy legs).

This is a wonderful poem that has stood the test of years.  Personally, I think you nailed what it means to be a woman.

Great poem that I am sure most of us can identify with.
