Old Lilac Lane
~ Linda L. Dowd ~

White picket fences line Old Lilac Lane,
The cottages are misted by gentle spring rain.
This scene is quite charming ~ as if out of a book,
And passersby stop for a lingering look.

Lilacs resplendent in purple profusion,
~ Their beauty does rival the fairest illusion.
The scent of their perfume is suspended in air,
~ Conjuring memories of a childhood so fair.

Swirling images from somewhere in time,
Come reeling in from deep recesses of mind.
~ A girl wearing ringlets and a pink pinafore,
Was cutting lush lilacs by a cottage front door.

I found myself querying, “Whoever could she be?”
But then I did realize, that the little girl was me!
I recalled all those visits ~ a long time ago,
To Grandmother’s house to watch her spring garden grow.

White picket fences line Old Lilac Lane,
The cottages are misted by gentle spring rain.
This scene is quite charming ~ as if out of a book,
And passersby stop for a lingering look.

“We are borne of star dust,
and to the stars we shall one day return.”

Oh, yes! I wish they would last longer as well!
I fill my house with lilacs when they are in season ~ and even when they aren't, I wear lilac essences and lotions and have lilac bubble baths. They're heavenly!

Suthern One ~

I went for a drive in the country yesterday afternoon and came upon the most charming road lined with white picket fences and glorious lilacs! I decided to write a poem about what I saw and how the sights and scents made me feel. It was a pleasure to share this through the writing of this poem!

Linda,

"line old Lilac Lane"

That phrase alone was enough to capture it for me!

Smell is our closest sensory link to our memory and your poetry takes one there,

Another Linda gem...

Those are beautiful flowers, Linda. When I was a little girl, I had a dream of a house out in the country, with a white picket fence. The flowers would be an added attraction. Well, I think I have finally given up on the house, with the white picket fence. As for the flowers, alot of heavy rains have come and drowned them all.

Sweet Sue ~

Keep the dream of the country house with the white picket fence, alive! Even when dreams do not come true, the dream itself can bring a modicum of pleasure.

As for your flowers being inundated with rain, perhaps you could have a little talk with Mother Nature.

I just wanted to tell you... I finally got to see... and SMELL... lilacs! *S* My nephew thought I was crazy when I stopped the rental car and was out in the rain sniffing bushes... but it was worth looking loony and getting damp for that first sighting! *S* I thought then of your poem... and how I'd recognized them immediately because of you. *S*

I can not believe I missed this one!  It must be a Canadian thing as my Gramma still lingers in my mind daily with the scent of her lilacs.  That picture you posted could have been to the right of her gate and the little girl walking through skipping excitedly could have been moi!  Linda, I kept this one and will get it framed to go on the wall, it's just precious.

(does happy lilac lane lindy-hop) Oh Linda, this is one of my favorites yet of yours as it paints such an impressionable picture of a moment of sentimental value I imagine resonates with so many people, reflecting on those special moments of youth that are so meaningful they even bring back the perfume of that special day to the room! (sigh) Bless you, dearest friend, as with many of your poems this one's heading into my library, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
