Yesterday’s Castle

Only weeds grow now
   where once children’s feet wore the yard bare.
Trees have overcome
   what once corralled horse and cow.
The twisted pile of weathered grey boards
   is nothing more than the grave of a once
   magnificent sheltering barn.
Two spokes, a half a broken hub,
   and a rusted rim are tombstone
   for the hearty wagon.

At the northern-most point of a scattered
   pile of square hewn stones,
   hand chiseled from beneath the prairie façade;
Is the lone monument of the four room
   castle that once was.
Standing like a mighty watch tower at the
    gate to an ancient fortress,
    as the home hearth and chimney still rise
    with the majestic pride of yester-year.
Standing tall, straight, and still stained by
    century old soot;
    what once gave warmth and light
    now provides cold shelter to bat or swallow.

Lost are lifetime memories of prairie dwellers
    now buried beneath the crumbled scattered walls,
    the fallen decayed roof,
    and the scattered stones
    interwoven with grasses, trees,
    and tumbling underbrush.

Yet buried deep beneath
    the apparent dead and forgotten,
The only remnants of yesterday’s castle---
    the prairie home of pioneers courageous,
    who dwelt within this simple dwelling;
Is not just that which closes the
     historic ages past,
          but also there thrive the living,
          ever present reminders
          of the courage needed to
          birth tomorrow’s future.

Brought thoughts of trees I planted in my past...in far away locations...and I wonder if they're still there...James
