Cyclone Bill and the Doll' Eyes We had a bent, old gard'ning man When I was just a child, Who'd lost his home and memory, Within a cyclone, wild! But who he was before that day, No one would ever know And he came to live at our place To help the flowers grow. My father called him "Cyclone Bill" And that became his name. He never had too much to do, To join me in some game. One day, my grandpa came to stay And brought me a surprise. A doll with curly, golden hair And lovely sky-blue eyes. I ran outside to show her to Cyclone Bill, my friend. I fell and broke the pretty head There was no way to mend. Bill helped me up and dried my tears. The doll's head he retrieved And told me then, this fairytale, That I, unquestioning, believed! "You know potato eyes will grow Potato plants," said he. "Now doll's eyes grow the nicest dolls That ever you did see," So underneath a rose bush fair, We planted those blue eyes And every day I watered them, To help the doll plant rise. And then one glorious morning, Upon that precious spot, There stood a doll as beautiful As one my grandpa bought! Betty Lou Hebert |

Enjoy poem stories and this one was a delight! Brings back memories of tending Potter's Field and Rosenzweig's Garden and the growing minds of little children. In some way, it validates that, somewhere, there is goodness in the world. [This message has been edited by r v wooo (04-04-2013 12:33 PM).] |

r v woo: Thank you for commenting on my poem. This was an event in my grandmother's life when she was about 5 years old. I always enjoyed hearing the story. Her family lived in southern Illinois. Trillium Betty Lou Hebert |

Hmmm, I have memories of time spent in Southern Illinois...however, my childhood days were spent on the east side of the Wabash River in Southern Indiana...I remember the history of my chromatic threads as they were related to me by those in the family that were the storytellers of the past. We all travel in the wilderness of life and have stories to tell about the past and I so much enjoy your story poems. |

This sounds like the same "Old Bill" who stayed at my folks' home in my childhood. His back was bent from the sack he carried on it and things he picked up and added to it each day. When ever Dad missed a tool, he'd make Bill open his sack and as likely as not that is where it was. Did Ron get his card? I sent it to your Idaho address. Love, Joyce |

Dear Joyce: Yes Ron did get his special card from you and was delighted! This Bill in my poem was found after a cyclone had passed through, lying in a farm field. He had no idea where he came from or who he was. My Great-grandfather took him in and he lived for many years with the family. Love Betty Lou |
