The Old Man

Every step is agony.
Needs help dressing, bathing,
can't reach his rump.
Sleeps for four hours
till the pills wear off.
Awake till next set kicks in.

Gets winded, coughing
just bathroom and back,
has to sit in the middle.
No air for shouting,
no air for ignorance,
disease has calmed him.

The past haunts him.
Remembers being young, strong
angry and full of pride.
Crazy man on a Harley,
suicidal all the way.
Thought he was invincible.

Every bone once broken,
screaming, pounding waves,
pain unexpected, undreamed.
Almost memorized the Book of Job.
Suffering is constant, multi-layered.
"I am blessed" he says with a smile.
