The Cries of Seagulls

The cries of seagulls lured me there,
Where sea wind tangled up my hair.
The ocean seeped into my soul
And dreams were caught upon the shoal.
I tried to fight the salty spell,
But sirens sang to me as well.
I gave up all my thoughts of flight
And stayed to marvel at the sight
Of endless rows of breaking waves.
I prowled the beach, explored the caves
That years had fashioned in the rocks.
Communed with ships beside the docks
And each one carried me away,
Every time it left the bay.
I am attuned to tidal flow.
There is no other spot I know
That feeds the wanderlust in me,
Except to live beside the sea.
And though life's currents took me far
Away from where those places are,
I can recall the scenes at will.
The cries of seagulls echo still!

Did you really live by the sea Betty?  You seem to love it so.  Beautiful poem.  Love, Joyce

I have never been to the ocean, but now i feel it pull at my heart, perhaps my feet will lead me there. And your words will ring in my ears.

Words have power, Im going to unleash the power of my soul.

I understand this. Have always lived near enough to the ocean to be ale to really enjoy it. When we moved south from Conn., we just moved on down the coast to Florida, not too far down just midway to Palm Coast.

best to you, jo perry

Captivatingly lovely. It had the lull of a ship at sea, the ebb and flow of tides, the mesmerizing quality that the ocean is where it all began, and where it all ends. Lovely, entrancing work. Thank you, m'dear.

Dear Betty Lou, your exquisite poem too is a celebration of the wonders of Earth and I am happy that I read it today on "Earth Day".

Yes, I know of this magnetism exercised by the Sea ...

Love,
Margherita

Dear Betty Lou

Your ability to bring your poetry to life is wonderful! I can smell the salty air, hear the cries of the seagulls and visualize the tidal flow.

Love Verbena xo

Have missed your poetry...your poems have feeling...they take me to places of interest and awaken memories.

When I was a young man...there was the sea, the salty air and the squawking gulls...but...as a boy, the memory that was drawn to the surface, by your poem, was my memory of courthouse pigeons as they flew about the building ledges, on Main Street, in that small town, I knew as home.

Who says, "You can't go home again."

In coming to read this again, I am reminded of a poet that has passed, and I sense that Seymour would have given bravos to this ...

I so glad it was bumped back up.

You should think of submitting this one, truly!
