Wild Horses A herd of mustangs haunts the draw Behind our ranch.I never saw A prettier sight beneath the sun, Than watching while wild horses run. Their manes and tails stream out behind. Their power and beauty is the kind That makes your heart beat wild and fast, Imprinting memories that last. The sound of hooves that strike the ground Like thunder rumbling around And when they wheel, the dust lifts high To drift like smoke across the sky. Sometimes, I hear them in the night, Giving a sudden snort of fright. Or they’ll nicker as if to say, They like it here and plan to stay. How I enjoy this glimpse they give Of how the west’s wild horses live. Betty Lou Hebert |

Sunshine: They are beautiful creatures and some of them seem to welcome human interaction. When we lived in the Nevada high desert country we had several who sort of adopted us! It was a wonderful experience. Thanks much for commenting.\ Betty Lou |

Oh, OH, OH, OH, OH! Trillium, you cannot begin to guess how much I love this! I don’t normally go into anything except the Main Forum, and if it hadn’t been for Margherita’s email (THANK YOU, MARGHERITA!), I wouldn’t have known it was here! I was involved with other people’s horses from the age of 7 and as an adult was owned by the most wonderful, loving horse in the world for 20½ years. His name was Flicka and he was 37½ years old when he went to Heaven on 28 April 2002 – and my world caved in. Owl |

Owl: Thnak you for taking time to tell me about your horse Flicka and for commenting on this poem. I've always loved horses and admired their beauty,but never had one of my own. I enjoyed the wild ones in Nevada and one mare who was reddish colored with a gold mane and tail seemed to take a shine to us. We lived in that areafor six years and i think about her so often. I just LOVED Betty Lou's poem - I saw all of those horses - every one - in all their individuality and the oneness of their unity - and I saw every one of their movements - I smelled that glorious horse perfume that they exude - I felt their horseness - I felt their magnificent power - and I experienced every one of the sensations that Betty Lou did, but was so swept away by it all that I was unable to express all of this when I read it - and SO aware of the fact that I wouldn't have had that experience if it hadn't been for you. Thank you for thinking of me when you see or read about horses and for calling me the epitome of a horse lover. Alison: Thank you so much for your nice comments! In the years I spent in the high desert country of Nevada, the horsess were the best part. We also had wild burrows around, and they were comical and fun to see, but nothing to compete with the horses there. Diana (Owl) Thanks for enlarging on your feelings about horses. I used to ride as a child on my uncle's farm, but as I got older, other things took me away from that environment and it's been many years now since I have been able to ride. Dear Betty Lou You verse beautifully! Horses are wonderful creatures. I have a lovely video called "The Man From Snowy River". It's an Australian Classic and it captures the spirit of Banjo Patterson's poem of the same name. The wild horses running through the Australian High Country is breathtaking. If anyone here in PiP have not seen this video, I highly recommend it. Love Verbena xo |
