Morgan's Wife The sheriff rode out early, It was scarcely breaking day. Said he had a prisoner Who had somehow slipped away. Morgan said he'd help him, Then he saddled up to go. I asked him when I'd see him, But he said he didn't know. I stood and watched them riding. Did all the chores I could. Hauled in two pails of water And stacked up some more wood, By evening it was snowing hard. I was glad to be inside, Then a face showed at the window And there was no place to hide. The man who stumbled through the door Was exhasured, I could see He collapsed upon the floor And then made a plea to me. He said he wasn't guilty. He'd been framed and couldn't die! His eyes were full of anguish And I couldn't tell you why, But I knew that he was truthful And I'd help him if I could. I gave warm clothes and money And I also said I would, Give my horse, that I held dear And I only asked that he Provide the best he could for her And treat her tenderly. He thanked me and he hurried. Heavy snow soon hid his track. But what I would tell Morgan When he came riding back? Betty Lou Hebert |

Hi Joyce: I don't know where you might have seen it. It has been published several times in different magazines or on the Internet. Maybe The Writing forum?? Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

A lovely story told there. 'I feel like an animal, and I don't think that I get it. But one day I'll see you around.' |

The sheriff rode out early, It was scarcely breaking day. Said he had a prisoner These lines are good. But any kind of poetry about police or sheriffs, I tend to repel. After these three lines, I did what is natural and I repelled. I didn't read anymore. Thanks for the read |

That read like a story in the making - would be too. Every written in the Prose section? Another lovely submission. |
