Morgan's Wife

The sheriff rode out early,
It was scarcely breaking day.
Said he had a prisoner
Who had somehow slipped away.
Morgan said he'd help him,
Then he saddled up to go.
I asked him when I'd see him,
But he said he didn't know.
I stood and watched them riding.
Did all the chores I could.
Hauled in two pails of water
And stacked up some more wood,
By evening it was snowing hard.
I was glad to be inside,
Then a face showed at the window
And there was no place to hide.
The man who stumbled through the door
Was exhasured, I could see
He collapsed upon the floor
And then made a plea to me.
He said he wasn't guilty.
He'd been framed and couldn't die!
His eyes were full of anguish
And I couldn't tell you why,
But I knew that he was truthful
And I'd help him if I could.
I gave warm clothes and money
And I also said I would,
Give my horse, that I held dear
And I only asked that he
Provide the best he could for her
And treat her tenderly.
He thanked me and he hurried.
Heavy snow soon hid his track.
But what I would tell Morgan
When he came riding back?

A whole story in such a few words! That is terrific!

Dear Barb:

It actually was a longer poem but I shortened it for the Pub. Glad you liked it!

Hi Joyce:

I don't know where you might have seen it. It has been published several times in different magazines or on the Internet. Maybe The Writing forum??

Honestly?

Well, okay, if you insist.

Honestly, I love this.  It's a great story and a wonderful poem.

Thank you.

A lovely story told there.

'I feel like an animal, and I don't think that I get it. But one day I'll see you around.'

These lines are good.  But any kind of poetry about police or sheriffs, I tend to  repel.

After these three lines, I did what is natural and I repelled.  I didn't read anymore.

Thanks for the read

That read like a story in the making - would be too.  Every written in the Prose section?  Another lovely submission.

Mysteria:

Nice to hear from you and glad you enjoyed the poem. I have written a book and had it published a year or so ago. Not about this however.
