Where Calmer Waters Lie

The wind is blowing suddenly.
I watch the dark clouds race
And see the gusts drive frothy spray
Across the lake's rough face.
My little boat is buffeted.
Before the breeze I fly
And point the bow into a bay
Where calmer waters lie.
It's here I'll wait until the storm's
Abrupt attack is done.
I'm floating like a bobbing cork,
My battle fought and won!

Betty Lou,

Your poetry is magic to me.  I love the ease - and envy your ability to write meter with an apparent ease.  I truly enjoyed this and appreciated the picture that you shared with us.

Love,
Alison

Dear Betty Lou

Great versing but this poem of yours brought memories back that made my heart race!  I was a teenager in far North Queensland in a place called Cardwell.  I'd gone for a days fishing with a friend in a small dinghy.  All was fine until just after 2pm when the sea started to get 'choppy' and what made things worse was the outboard motor wouldn't start.

There were sharks around too; some even as long as the dinghy and by this time I was getting really scared! The swell was getting worse by the minute and after a half an hour we finally got the outboard motor going.  However, because of the swell, the motor blades were barely touching the surface of the water.  We had to steer the boat diagonally across the waves.

A dugong came so close to us that I thought it would capsize our boat.  We didn't have any life jackets or flares. It took us nearly five hours to get back to shore and it was nearly dark by then!  I could see the lights in the distance and what a relief it was when my feet hit solid ground!  I've never been out deep sea fishing again!

Love Verbena xo

Dear Verbene:

What an adventure!!  I wouldn't want to go back to sea in a small boat again either. Even in our 36 footer, there were times i would have rather been on shore! You must have  been terrified!

Thanks for reading and leaving your story!

Love
Betty Lou
