Woods Warriors

I heard the coyotes howl last night.
There was no moon. They need no light,
To prowl the woods and hunt for prey.
They always find it anyway!
I suppose a sense of smell
Or intense eyesight serves them well.
They are swift, there is no doubt
And nothing's safe when they're about.
I used to live where wolves abound.
There really is no other sound
Like their call; it chills my soul
And yet I know they fill a role
In nature, that is needed too.
As other predators will do,
They take the weak, the sick and old,
That will succumb to winter's cold.
They seem so brutal, no remorse,
But then, they too must live of course!

Dear Betty Lou,
this is most beautiful and even poignant, as you speak of these animals with such respect and understanding.
You made me remember the scene of the wolves in the movie "Doctor Zhivago", brrrrrrr ... goosebumps even in remembering!!
You bring great emotion with your words.
Thank you!
Love,
Margherita

I know these guys well I am afraid.  They surface at dusk, and hunt until early morning here.  They have killed more animals around me than I care to tell you.  Before you would see one, or even perhaps two, but now ours are starting to "pack."  That is darn scary.

You are right though, we take from these animals that which made them "full" so they come down to find something else to eat.  Sad, we are doing this to ourselves.

Oh, GREAT poem!

Margherita:  Thanks for reading. I know that so many people dislike wolves and there is a movement afoot around here in the Northern part of the country to eradicate them. I can understand that people are afraid of them, but that seems so final an act. It makes me sad to see any part of nature destroyed.

Mysteria:  So nice to hear from you! I grew up in the Peace River country of Alberta on a homestead my parents had. We were surrounded by wolf packs and saw and heard them almost every day. It seems so strange to me now, but I was never afraid of them then. Too young to know better I guess, but I suspect game was so plentiful, they had no interest in our farm animals. We never had a problem with them. I didn't like hearing them howl however!

Your knowledge of nature and ability to write in poetry about it is beyond compare.  I don't know how I missed this.  Joyce

Dear Betty Lou

As your coyotes and wolves, our dingoes too need to survive!  Man regard these wonderful creatures as pests and a danger to society but it is man that has detroyed their habitat and have forced them to become scavengers of bins and campsites etc.

A great poem about your "Woods Warriors".

This is a lovely poem. I love the rhythm it has; makes for easy reading. The subject is one I've never thought to write about but then we don't have coyotes(?) in Florida. Thanks for sharing this. I look forward to reading more of your work.

Betty Lou,

I remember camping out and listening to the wolves howl. It was a magical night under a large moon.

Your poetry flows beautiful.     Maybe someday, I will master that.

I do so enjoy your poetry.

I'm guessing this 'poem' is saying that you are very considerate that all things has a right to survive, here on earth, if so you are right, it's the will of God, and so be it. Very good, Betty.

booky 1940!  Thanks for commenting on this poem and you are correct about my feeling there is a place for every type of life on earth.

What part of Canada are you in?  I grew up in northern Alberta.

Best wishes
