I remember how I hated That decorated box And wanted to be absent on that day. My sad excuses did not fly, I just had to pretend To be happy for the cards that came my way. Pretty Helen had the biggest pile, Accepted as her due. We knew which boy had sent the biggest one. He tried hard not to look at her, As she opened it and read And to ignore the other boys poking fun. My mama had insisted I take one for every child, So everyone would get a card or two. Allowing for the teacher's, As I took a look around, There was only one more card for little Sue. She opened it and read it, Smiled her shy smile at me. I wondered how my darling mother knew That if I did not remember There would be some lonely child With only teacher's card to see her through. Joyce 01/31/09 |

Joyce, This is sweet, but brings back those memories of feeling excluded. It's sad that some children just are singled out to be ignored. I truly enjoy your poetry. Happy Valentine's Day. Alison |

You know Joyce I never even thought about that until you wrote this poem, as I used to get a box full. We made these boxes for the day out of Kleenix boxes, and now that you brought it to light, I can almost pictures this girl in the corner in my room, whose box as virtually empty. Sad, when children are singled out. |

Dear Joyce: This brought back memories for me too. I was so shy as a young girl it was hard for me to make friends and Valentine's Day was torture! I seldom got more than a couple of cards and the other girls got scads of them! It seemed so important then! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

When you are young and shy it is hard not to be miserable when you feel left out. I hope that this practice has been stopped and I hope everyone is obliged to bring one for each or not at all. Thanks everyone for answering. Joyce |

I was always the one people forgot to count when bringing treats for the class or passing out cards. Your mother is a wise woman for reminding you to take cards for everyone ![]() ~ Previously Known as Broken_Winged_Angel and BrokenWinged_Angel~ |
