The Pond In Winter

Smooth as glass and dark as night,
The pond reflects the morning light.
Faintest ripples nudge the edges,
Gently swaying reeds and sedges.
Winter sky and snow-clad tree,
Lie in perfect imagery.
Something soothing and serene
Covers this hibernal scene.
From the road, you'd never know,
That a short tramp through the snow
Leads you to this lovely place,
Where the pond reveals its face!

Dear Joyce:

The middle of the pond is still unfrozen and there is a slight flow of water still.
Thanks for your sweet comment!

Honey child ... you've sent me photographs
of your snow piles ... I'm surprised you
can even FIND that pond~
Well, if you can word-walk across it ...
you've done just fine~
See ya' on the other side of the pond
in the Spring-of-time~

Dear Marge:

I don't know if you can still see the pond or not. I haven't been back there since the snow was two feet deep. I will not be seeing it for awhile!

Dear Betty Lou, I so love ponds in every season and in Winter they are magical, just the way you so wonderfully describe in your poem!

Enjoyed this much! I remember we went ice skating on the frozen ponds back in Switzerland when I was young ... simply fantastic! Thans for refreshing these memories too.

Margherita:  Thanks for commenting on this poem. I too skated on ponds, where I grew up in Canada. It was a wonderful feeling and surroundings.

everyone should have a pond in winter,
spring,
summer
and fall,
as a place
to listen,
to the birds,
the frogs
and the wind that calls.

there was such a space,
in my life,
long,
long ago.
never to be seen again,
'cept as memory.
for i passed there,
the other day,
and all was gone!

I'm sorry to hear you pond is gone. It is distressing to see so many of the natural places like this disappearing. We live far enough from town that so far, we are able to keep the pond and wetlands, etc. However, one of these years, someone is going to move into this valley and start subdividing it undoubtedly.
