The Cedar Chest

My father was a carpenter.
A master at his trade
And I still have the cedar chest
That he so carefully made.
A gift of love, when I was young,
It's held my dearest things
And I savor pleasant thoughts
The sight of it still brings.
It holds more than my treasures,
For laughter dwells there too.
A snatch of song, a cherished voice,
(And a French curse or two!)

Denise:  Thanks for reading. I lost my Dad when he was young, so the cedar chest means all the more to me.

BettyLou~
You have just written of my favorite-in-the-world thing~

My treasured chests belonged to my mother-in-love, bought in 1919 when she was just a young lady ... and my mother's chest bought when she was just a young mother, tucking memories away for times like this ... to be plundered through ... fingering memories~

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS~
I can well-imagine how you treasure yours~

Dear Marge:

I know how you must feel about your chests and I suppose it is the same as I. My dad died many years ago, but everytime I open the lid of that chest and look at its contents, it's as if he is right beside me.
I;m glad I was able to share in the building of it, as well as the finished product.

as usual, a well crafted tidbit. Isn't it amazing how much nostalgia there seems to be in our lives.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Thank you pegasus.  You are right, we are quite surrounded with things that remind us of the past.........at least I am. I do treasure the family items that I have but perhaps attach too much importanced to them!
