Harvest There is smoke upon the mountain And the valley's filled with haze. Now the autumn leaves are falling Through these melancholy days. As I walk the wild lake's edges I can hear the mad loon's cry And I search to see geese flying In dark vee's across the sky. And the red sun sinks in splendor, While the harvest moon appears To be larger and more yellow Than it has in other years. As I gather in the apples, I am gathering memories too Of flaming sugar maple trees And of mornings pearled with dew. Of the evening's purple shadows And a hundred other sights And sounds and scents and feelings That will warm my winter nights! Betty Lou Hebert |
