Cake Walk The school sent out a brief request, That every mother make her best Cake, to bring to the spring fair. Of course, our family would be there. I made a Devil's Food.My son, Explaining when the cake was done, That he would win it back so we Could dine upon it lavishly! I told him what a cake walk meant. He scrapped together every cent His six year piggy bank revealed And thought that he was then well-heeled! I was aware the teachers knew The plan he was committed to. The music rang, the children then Marched around the chairs and when It stopped, they hurried to sit down. I saw my young son give a frown! He didn't find the winning chair And showed his disappointment there. Twelve times he marched, cakes disappeared But mine was still there and he feared! Then suddenly, he reached his goal. The cake was his! It warmed my soul! Those teachers were so very wise. They saved that cake to be his prize! Upon each face a grin appeared And all the children laughed and cheered!
