A laggard tea-bag of a sun Dips into boiling waters Of carefully brushed And swabbed Yards of horizon Attention to refraction Off foggy fingers Mimicking the swirls Of Armada in the distance As it reaches out its ribcage To swallow every winged-blot And stumblin' slob With ear bent to the cast Making sure its lunchsack is packed Reel strung and waxed Against wishes of Father Jovial And his flock of northern-eyed dove With hymnbook in hand Sing a number for Uncle Dontgiveadamn As he dips his webbed toes And walks on water With a flask full of Kentucky And pocket full of yesterday's Derby-numbered stubs The fog opens its recipe-book Cooks up the brightest eyed Mouth-wide catch of the season And waterflies walk on tiptoes As the pike licks algae clean Every stone as smooth as the next And the jutted log sways in morning trance Caught in the web of a 10 year-ago lure Who's father long went home To a plate of mashed starch And gravyed protein A bean from the yard Pickled in momma's jar She opts fishing with a spade In a garden full of blushing-red Orbs with grins on their faces I spy from my train Back to York again What I so hated in my raising But suddenly doesn't seem so bad Starin' at a billion lights Clamored around teeth chatterin' horns Blowin' an absent minded hoot Like myself right into a hydrant No room to breath a poetic thought Or think about Rumi Or grin about stars Or kissin' Annie in the yard One wide map with riddles to solve Stray too far You get thrown to the dogs Its enough to make a man Want to evolve |
