South Sandwich Isles Far from land, in southern seas Where penguins nest in colonies And giant petrels haunt the skies With six foot wing spans, also lies, Vast rookeries of gulls and tern, On cliffs above the ocean's churn. This chain of islands is remote And seldom visited by boat. Eight months of the year, held fast By sea ice's frigid grasp! They're raked by storms so fierce and strong, You'd think that nothing would belong On such a harsh, unfriendly shore, But even fur seals, by the score, Seem to like these isles to breed. Perhaps because there is no need To fear intrusion there by man. They all survive as best they can. The world's not finished with this spot, For volcanoes, steaming hot, Spew forth lava, clouds of ash Above tectonic plates that clash And creep three inches every year. It seems there is a lot to fear, Yet all these creatures like it here! Betty Lou Hebert |
