Mrs. Carmichael

Our laying hen had chicks and we
Had gone out to the coop to see
The little balls of yellow down
Although the hen herself was brown.
My sister, who was only ten,
Had picked one up, walked round the pen
And then declared when mother came,
Mrs. Carmichael was its name.
It was different than the rest
And had a dark spot on its chest.
Of course we laughed, especially when
It was a rooster, not a hen.
She didn't care or change her mind.
For many years we'd always find
Where she was, there was the other.
I guess he thought she was his mother!

BettyLou~
You share such cute memories in rhyme~

This one reminds me of a little tale my steppie-sis and I share about an Easter gift of a purple chick that she received from a friend of mine ... that was probably nearly 45 (+) years ago and we still always ask about *Margaret* the purple chick~

This is cute.  I hatched a chick on the windowsill once when I was small.  The egg had been sold to us at the grocery store but looked suspicious.  I named her Clementine and she lived to a happy old age and was spared from the pot.  Joyce

"The Other Mrs. Carmichael"  Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed this. We never knew where my sister came up with that name, as none of us knew a Carmichael, but she was sure determined about it!

Dear Marge:  A purple chick is even more fascinating than a rooster named "Mrs. Carmichael!"  You should write a poem about it!

Dear Joyce:  Thanks!  I guess most of us who lived on farms have a chick in their background somewhere!  They are so cute it's hard not to make a pet out of at least one!

This makes me smile and remember our female rabbit named "Sarge"  -- we couldn't understand why Sarge would not breed with my little female.  Go figure.

xoxoxo
Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh I am so glad Alison dug this up as I had never seen it - how adorable!  I could see a children's book of poetry with this being in it.    Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Thanks Alison!  Hope your Thanksgiving was a happy one. We have had a blizzard all week here and the snow is getting pretty deep!
