An Instant

The blackness of night engulfs me
I linger on the edge of sleep
staring out at the clear, navy sky
of a summer evening on the prairies

I know you’re out there
staring at these same stars
in a summer night sky.
But where?

I ponder this in the darkness
staring out at the stars
and in a moment
I feel as never before.

Warmth runs through my veins.
My mind quiets
and I can’t help but smile.
I feel valued, loved, treasured.

And in that moment
drifting between sleep and waking
I feel a strong arm wrap round my shoulders
pulling me close.

Not sure if I’m dreaming
I lay my head on the shoulder next to mine
and not daring to look,
Not wanting to shatter the fantasy
As we watch the stars together.
