Listen. Do you hear it? A clicking fills the frigid air Machines of life that bleed despair Puppets choking by their strings Birds vainly flapping broken wings The eye burns red and out they step To cross the road in a lonely crowd Faces down, their motions jerking Yanked along by stubborn strings To where they must go To what they must do To who they must be Their expressions reveal nothing As the hooks, the strings that Sunk so far beneath the skin Pull them onward through the rain and Drag them forward through the pain But in their minds lies their surprise They do not see their own demise Their heads are filled with greed and numbers Judgments, sins, and dark-kept secrets Selfish wants and selfless notions Destined never to see daylight Above the Laughing Puppeteer Sobs for his toys that will not talk Yanks at the strings that make them walk Wishing that he could cut the chords That hold the little puppets up And force them all to stand alone Unaided by his skillful hand And so the Master cut a few Just to see what they would do Slowly each of them stood up Looked about with thoughtful heads Took one small step and promptly fell But pulled themselves back to their feet So as the puppets danced along The few he cut fell to floor But bit by bit, and in due time They learned to walk and Changed the world And as each player moves their piece, confident and tall |
