An old man wanders in the dark
Between the narrow, cobbled streets

A cane in hand, he softly limps
Beneath the weight of many years

A cane as black as night, it clicked;
He stabbed the stones with every step.

And as he walks he looks about
Pierces darkness with his stare;
He vomits curses at the ghosts
Of memories in hiding there.

All around him shades are dancing
Conducted by his tapping cane
A chilling symphony of soul
That fills the lonely alley lane

He howls at the shadows, swipes and swings
Frantically forcing back the flood

Besieged he stumbles through the night
Chased by phantoms of his choir
The surging cries that bite his ear
The softest breaths of “Liar, liar.”

Memories that will not die
Whirl about him as he flees.

And though he tries he can’t escape
The warden of his guilty heart.

Chained in the shackles of his past
The old fool staggers from his cell
Desperate to escape the dreams
That burn him like the flames of Hell.

At every turn of the winding maze
A face is waiting, a voice is sobbing.

With a manic yell he hastens past
But the Past is never far behind.

He howls at the shadows, swipes and swings
Frantically forcing back the flood.

Trapped in Time he wanders through
A town he hardly used to know.

Lost in the twilight of his sense
Hunted by his hated heart
The moon above looks calmly on
As the voices tear his soul apart.

En masse behind him, shadows skip
Screaming madness in his mind
Teasing him for thinking he
Could simply leave the guilt behind.

And as each player moves their piece, confident and tall
They forget that they can move themselves, in the greatest game of all
