Crunching crystal snow-snaps Beneath the slow and somber feet Clouds hiss like rising smoke, across a cold and barren sky Wind whips and howls like souls of the tormented A silence penetrates, reverberates, and resonates with echoes in the gloom The final fading phantoms of forgotten flesh Cracked and crumbling Fitful restless hallways Paced by the unseen feet from long ago Battered, bent, and broken doors Shattered panes of dusty glass Quiet tombs that had once heaved with life Whispers from the broken desks snared from little, crumpled notes Passed from hand to youthful hand Relics drowned in dark dust-motes But to a few this was much more than a cold and empty place Back in a world that lived behind the glassy eyes it breathed! Oh, but that was Many years ago And as each player moves their piece, confident and tall They forget that they can move themselves, in the greatest game of all |
