Who loves not the flowers that bloom, The way they brighten up an old room And spread about their sweet perfume? Yet when they linger and slowly dry And are not as pleasant to the eye Do you just trash them with a sigh? What of the memories? Are you not moved by a lover’s touch By that certain someone that means so much By the caress or kiss or other such? Yet when the cold takes them away And that chill of missing numbs your day Can you just shrug and be on your way? What of memories? Gloom |

Wonderful and poignant questions, dear Professor Gloom. Mourning is necessary for our loved ones when they leave us, as well as for the flowers when they wither. I always say "thank you" to the flowers in the moment of disposing of them. And the same we have to feel for a heart who once beat in unison with ours and doesn't anymore ... "thank you" for the gift. Memories remain, as fresh as ever, but besides occasional tears they also induce smiles of gratitude and happiness. No shrugs, no, never indifference! Love your beautifully expressed thoughts and again I send you a big hug. Margherita |

Dear Gloom, This is a lovely sonnet of mourning and touches me very personally. I'll keep it on my writing desk, as your words express what mine could not. Thank you. |

It is good to be true about the other side of beauty---the wilting of the flowers, but it is also good to appreciate the persistence of that which is beautiful---the continuity of life. I like the honesty I feel when I read your poems. Thanks, art |

Yo Professor Gloom, This is a lovely write. What form of sonnet is it? It's okay to make up your own form. Bobby |

Thank you, Margherita, I am pleased that you enjoyed these words Thank you, Raindance, Truly high praise you offer for my words, I am honored Thank you, gilead, I write what I see around me, I am pleased my vision in words is so well received. Thank you, Marchmadness, Although I have continued to write, prose over poetry of late, I always tend to return to poetry in posting Thank you, Robert E. Jordan, As you know the forms of a sonnet are varied With the only true requirement that it is 14 lines, I have adapted this form to my expression which is a variation of a the 4, 1, 4, 1, 4 style that was popular in 17th century Europe. I have boxes of dried petals, still more boxes of photographs... and memories almost as vivid as the events that birthed them. *S* They are all treasured. *S* Wonderful write! |
