I heard two cats fighting to the death; or maybe making love You judged the book by it's cover then read the last page first A dead battery or maybe he's just tied up with someone else The things you never dared to ask because they all come with strings attatched So much faith in the chair you sit in to hold your weight With the world on your shoulders how could such an old piece of furniture refuse to break Candles that could shine so bright if only they were lit But you drained your lighters fluid with the last 6 cigarettes An empty suitcase reminds you of home; or perhaps your long lost love Then again, what worldly possessions don't remind you of him Your bed remains abandoned but from the looks of it, in use Pillows out of place and the blankets wrapped around you Lampshades casting shadows because you refuse to switch the lights Darkness brings a form of fear that you don't think you could endure Pictures on the wall you notice for the first time in several days Wishing you were under the bridge where you cast your emotions into the winding river of past memories Trash scattered on the floor; how did the ashtray get so full You exhale only to clear the smoke, the fog on the window Perfect for sketching names and regrets, leaving only smudged fingerprints behind Nothing to remember those tragic mistakes by And all they ever say is "life is never fair" You judged the book by it's cover then read the last page first Surrounded by people you've never seen before This could very well be Hell and you could very well be dead You're just another lost cause in a book no one has read February 11th Wednesday 2009 Emily Shives |

Impressive work, dear Emily!! You described a scenery that many surely can relate to, because I guess very few can say they have never in their life experienced such a sense of abandonment. A very good poem! I am sure you have cleaned up meanwhile and feel better. Love, Margherita |

SlowlyFallAway - I thoughorly enjoyed this write. Found it amazing that you came up with so many different scenarios with their opposites. Very nice... BC |

Sometimes I think beauty to be finest in its darkest aspect. This is darkly beautiful, and it resonates deeply. A fine achievement, Emily. art |

favorite line: "You're just another lost cause in a book no one has read" very insightful. |
