Yesterday’s House

The pale-blue porch swing swayed as if it
held a soul while l stared at the white,
paint-peeled ceiling, watching cherubs
whisper sadly amongst themselves.
The untended, fading grass,
shuddered under my footsteps
rendering me a trespasser
in this place where laughter had
tolled the hours, when love
the days did rule and life seemed endless.

The remnants of that time
wrapped themselves around my breath,
clinging as I stared at the door.
The dust-filmed windows
free from reflection with drawn shades
and I wondered if your last thoughts
before you drove away were of me,
while I wrapped myself in memories,
my tears drenching the dry ground
where once we walked in such pride.
the emptiness of the house
obliterates who we then were,
leaving me with whom I have become.

Yo dear Marcia MT,

That's the way it works out sometimes.  It's a sadness many people pass through.
