Little Bones knows
everyone has their challenges,
he understands that.

Everyone lives
in a brutish world,
where the only thing understood
is strength and overpowering force.

Little Bones
understands all this.

That’s why
it was such a great surprise
for little Bones
when he got out of the hood
for the first time,
and didn’t have to run and hide,
or fight just to stay alive.

It was a big surprise,
and he never quite got over it.

It happened
when he was first sent
to summer camp
by The Fresh Air Fund.

Thanks dear Juju,

Yes, after he got over being homesick, he did have a lot of fun at camp.

Then he got sent back home.

He was left with a good, and lasting memory, but only a memory.  Of course, good memories are very important.

Love Bobby

Hello Bobby, I think for a lot of people it is good to escape their environment even regular ones, specially if it is a hard one...I am happy for Bones . Thanks for the thoughtful poem.

Do you know what I'd like, Robert?
I'd like little Bones to see the Mendip Hills, In Somerset; let him fish the valley streams.
I'd like him to take a boat trip on The Loch, beneath Ben Lomond; leave the hood for 'his' valley, for 'his' Loch Lomond. But the hood must call in its marker, I know that.
You really got to me with this one.

This surprises me too, dear Bobby. For some children it surely can be different, when they know nothing about competition and rivalry and have to cope with it for the first time, even in a summer camp.

I am happy for Bones for this good memory.

Love,

Summer camps provided some of my happiest memories from childhood. The Fresh Air Fund is a worthy charity because of the opportunities they provide for children like Bones. Attending summer camp can be a life-altering experience as it proved to be for dear Bones.

Thanks Osprey,

I'm very pleased that you enjoyed the poem.

Bones, after he grew up, did get to do engineering work, and visit the places you mentioned.

Thanks dear Margherita,

Bones enjoyed his time at camp.

In truth, there is quite a bit of competition just to stay alive in the hood.  What was new for Bones was the fresh air, and lack of danger.

Thanks dear Linda,

You are correct, summer camp is always loads of fun.

Unfourtanatly, Bones had to move from Philadelphia to New York City to get to go to The Fresh Air Fund camp.

The Christian Association of the University of Pennsylvania used to run a camp for Philadelphia's disadvantaged kids like Bones at Green Lane, PA.  I don't think they do that anymore.  Now Bones would be stuck in the city all summer.  At least he'd be able to swim in the river.
